  1. Originally a group of Principalities, dominated by the Gurkhas,
  2. who ruled until 1769.  In 1951 King Tribhubana Bir Bikram, of the
  3. Shah family, ended the domination by the Ranas family and started
  4. a cabinet system of government.  Previously closed to outside
  5. societies, Nepal now enjoys roads and air service to India and
  6. Pakistan, as well as Tibet.  In 1963, polygamy, child marriages
  7. and the caste system were abolished.                    @
